A Mobile native, Gil graduated from UMS-Wright Preparatory School in 1981, earned his B.S. in Accounting and Business Administration from Washington & Lee University in 1985, his J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1988, and his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University in 1989.
At Alabama Law, Gil earned numerous academic honors, including the West Publishing Company Award, the Justice Hugo L. Black Scholar Award, and The Order of the Coif. At NYU, served as a Graduate Editor of the Tax Law Review.
Gil holds an AV Preeminent Rating by Martindale-Hubbell — the highest rating in both legal ability and ethical standards — and has been recognized in "The Best Lawyers in America" for Tax Law and Trusts & Estates, including as a 2021 "Lawyer of the Year."
He is a member of the Mobile County Bar Association and the Alabama Bar Association. He serves as President of Alabama 1031 Property Exchange, Inc. and has published articles in The Alabama Lawyer, The Journal of Taxation, Taxes, and several BNA publications.
Gil is past Chairman of the Tax Section of the Alabama Bar Association and has served on numerous professional, civic, and nonprofit boards throughout his career.
